Logistics, details, and frequently asked questions
In preparation for your excursion, you may wish to make note of the following logistical details.
Participation Guidelines
There are no minimum or maximum height or weight restrictions associated with this excursion. Children aged 8 and above are welcome when accompanied by a responsible adult. Exceptions may be made for younger children traveling with a family of three or four.
Physical Activity
Physically active persons who are comfortable being outdoors for six to seven hours will enjoy this excursion the most. Some walking over uneven terrain is required, as is the ability to climb in and out of the skiff. Not recommended for persons confined to a wheelchair.
Restrooms
Restrooms are available when leaving and returning to Ketchikan. During the course of the excursion, the great outdoors provides privacy for the call of nature. We provide individual toiletry packets. At camp, a rustic, private facility is available to women.
Fishing License
A fishing license is required for all guests over 16 years of age. For a fee of $10, we can issue licenses at the planning room. Credit cards are not accepted. Please bring cash, exact change preferred.
What to Bring
Dress warmly and in layers. You may wish to bring a camera, sunglasses, sunscreen, lip balm, etc. We provide all necessary outerwear and fishing gear.
Guides and Escorts
A tour coordinator and excursion guides escort cruise guests from the dock to our planning room. Guides operating the skiffs are licensed by the United States Coast Guard.
Safety and Security
Your safety is our primary concern. Although most excursion activities are low risk, there are some conditions that warrant caution. In particular, trails and embankments do not have guardrails or barriers of any kind. Proceed carefully along all shorelines, where 24-foot tides are common and rocks are slick. Please follow all instructions from the guide. Our guides are trained to attend to minor injuries, and carry first aid kits and communication equipment. Participants should be aware that in wilderness conditions, an injury or other medical emergency places a victim at greater risk than in areas where professional medical help and services are readily available. In the event of inclement weather condition, we will explore and fish numerous bays and inlets in an effort to ensure your safety while maximizing your enjoyment of the experience.
Wildlife
There are no poisonous snakes or other venomous creatures in Alaska. There are no grizzly bears near our camp locations but there are black bears. Although sightings are common, black bears around our camps are rare, and we have never had a bear in camp. The risk of injury due to contact with wildlife is as low as anywhere in North America.
Cancellations
Cancellations are rare and are only made when weather conditions prohibit departure. In the event the operator cancels a tour, the tour guest receives a full refund.
